Read the introduction to Unit 7, "Qualitative Methods: Ethnography and Case Study." This reading introduces you to ethnography and case study, including data collection and data analysis.
Use your Leedy and Ormrod text to complete the following:
• Review Chapter 6, "Qualitative Research," pages 139–167. This chapter provides more information on qualitative research, including data collection and analysis for ethnography and case study.
Use the Internet to complete the following:
• In Percy and Kostere’s 2008 Qualitative Research Approaches in Psychology, review "Ethnography" on pages 14–18, "Case Study" on pages 18–21, and "General Qualitative Analysis" on pages 5–13.
Use the library to complete the following:
• In Woodside’s 2010 e-book, Case Study Research: Theory, Methods, and Practice, read Chapter 1, "Building Theory from Case Study Research," pages 1–16. This chapter provides in-depth information on the case-study approach, including data collection and data analysis. The chapter also includes examples of research and evaluates the appropriateness of the approach for psychology.
• Read Miller, Hengst, and Wang’s 2003 article, "Ethnographic Methods: Applications from Developmental Cultural Psychology," in Qualitative Research in Psychology: Expanding Perspectives in Methodology and Design, pages 219–242. This article provides in-depth information about ethnography, including data collection and data analysis, as well as examples of ethnographic research.
Readings for Discussion
Use the library to locate two articles from the professional psychological literature that use qualitative methods. One of the articles should utilize an ethnography approach and the other article should utilize a case-study approach. The Search by Methodology guide will show you some techniques for searching by methodology within the library’s article databases.

For the ethnography article you selected in this unit’s Studies, the Readings for Discussion section, do the following:
• Describe the characteristics of the research that allow you to know that the research used an ethnographic approach.
• Identify the key phenomena under investigation.
• Describe the data-collection process, including the role of the researcher.
• Describe the approach to analyzing the data in this study.
• Evaluate the scientific merit of the selected approach. How did the ethnographic approach help the researcher answer the research question? How might you have designed this study differently?
