BIT305 Knowledge Management Systems – Report & Presentation

Write a research report, of 1600 words in length, paper analysing an organisation’s use of knowledge management systems, including: – how data is captured – how data is managed – how data is used – ethical and legal issues associated with the capturing of data. The assignment is in two parts (Part A, worth 20% and Part B, worth 20%) + Oral Presentation (10%) Part A: KM System Evaluation for an Organisation – Part A Report (20%) In the first part of this assignment, you would provide a report evaluating an organisation’s use of knowledge management systems. It consists of addressing the following questions for an organisation, which could be selected as one of the KM case scenarios discussed in class: a) What are the goals of this organisation – what problem(s) are they trying to address? Which, if any, are KM-related problems? What are the others? Identify the tacit and the explicit knowledge to be addressed for this organization. List both types of knowledge in a table and justify your categorization. What is the company doing well in terms of addressing tacit knowledge? Explicit knowledge? What could they do better to capture and manage data? Provide some recommendations and explain how the company would benefit from them. b) Position the different aspects of KM at the company on the BTOPP framework (BenefitsTool-Organization-People-Process). In your opinion, are they headed in the right direction? Are they using effective incentives for knowledge sharing? How will they measure the benefits of having KM in place? What would you recommend to this company and in what order/sequence – what should they tackle first? Why? How would you convince them using an appropriate KM cycle that this is the right step/direction for the use of KM systems?

This is how the paper should be done

PART A

  1. Goals of World Bank

The first objective and aim World Bank Group is to end the extreme poverty through decrease in percentage rate of the individuals who live on less than a particular dollar daily, for this case, $ 1.90, which is not more than the 3% ( World Bank Group 2012)

Problems Addressed by World Bank

With group of World Bank, some of the major concerns are on the forms of funding development projects. In addition, several infrastructure projects that are financed by this organization face both the social as well as environmental forces. For instance, in case of populations that are influenced and criticized on this note, funds have been allocated to help fight the ethical as well as cultural issues. Also, the constructions that are funded by World Bank, which include the hydroelectric dams in several states, have contributed to reports on displaced families. Some of these issues are bank related and as such, the knowledge management is involved, however, is equivalently addressing the issue through restructuring the incentives and sentiments that will enable the outsourcing of any accredited project to prevail. Apart from the KM related problems, the World Bank faces threats from different organizations that would lead to dissatisfaction reports from its consumers. As such, the main factor in ensuring that the projects are facilitated on a specific agenda would ensure proper reinforcement of rules and regulations that guide a particular project.

Tacit knowledge is one that is difficult to express through paper writings or transfer from one organization or individual. Therefore, the knowledge is one of the challenges of knowledge management. Also, tacit knowledge to be addressed for the World Bank group include; innovation, intuition and emotional intelligence, which are expressed from this sentiment. The tacit knowledge to be addressed for the World Bank is its intuition in terms of the strategic development of reinforcing its objectives. For instance, the focus is on a logic platform of poverty that requires knowledge for its implementation. On the other hand, the explicit knowledge refers to one that can be directly articulated, drawn or verbalized. The example from this approach include; drawing information from the textbooks, internet or encyclopedias.  The World Bank Group relies on the information that would help with its innovation, which in most cases, is drawn from the internet. The awareness has enabled this organization achieve some of its goals that include the eradication of poverty. The approach taken for this objective was drawn from the internet, and other materials which help with the research analysis in different areas experiencing poverty.

Encyclopedia Media Emotional intelligence

The World Bank reinforces policies through the emotional intelligence approach that help with the development of its management process. Besides, the deliveries of services highly depend on the intuition of the human resource management, through the awareness of the 21st century, for any decision making. Tacit knowledge then applies for such cases. On the other hand, the explicit knowledge is reflected on the research analysis that World Bank performed regarding the rates of poverty in the world. The approach was drawn from the media and partial observation which is part of the explicit knowledge (Wenger 2009).

The organization can use methods of data analysis such as observation, reports as well as questionnaire distribution for capturing data on the poverty rates. Besides, the World Bank, in partnership with different charity and non-governmental organizations, will help in the issuing of ideologies for the better improvements of environments where poverty has surpassed.
