Reflect on how Buddhist ideas about death and suffering (and/or self and other) challenge basic assumptions in the West in an essay of 1500-2000 words. How might Buddhist ideas have made – or promise to make a difference – in our understanding and experience of death? You should include readings from Sogyal Rinpoche, The Tibetan Book of the Dead films and Powers, in addition to any other works from the course you find relevant, such as those by Thich Nhat Hanh. The essays will be graded on the depth and originality of your reflection on your experience as well as your reflection on the readings for class, how effectively you communicate your thoughts, and how well you demonstrate what you have learned in the course.
