Canterbury Tale: Focus on the basic building blocks of literary criticism Custom Essay
In this assignment we will focus on the basic building blocks of literary criticism the close reading.
This is where all great works of literary criticism and theory begins. It starts with reading, noticing details, and thinking about how
these details combime in various and sundry ways into a greater whole.
In this close reading paper, your text will be either Sir Oreo or one of The Canterbury Tales from the course reading.
To perform a close reading, one must choose a specific passage and analyze it in fine detail, as if one is viewing it under a
microscoope or with a magnifying glass. One must then cratf the observations into a thoughtful and interesting discussion of the
passage that will enrich the reading of the passage for the university educated critical reader. To start a close reading, ask
questions about the passage and subject the passage to strenuous examination.
Possible starting question: why did you choose the passage that you chose for close reading? What appealed to you about that passage?
What type of first impression did it make upon you? Did that impression modify as you continued to reread and think about the passage?
What mood is created by the passage? How is that mood created? Does language create the mood or is it something else? Speaking of
language what is remarkable about the language? What about imagery is there imagery that ties this passage to the entire work or to
similar works? What are the color, sounds, or ideas suggested. Who is speaking? Who is the audience? Is this important, why?
As you can see close reading is unrestrained thinking about your subject. Ask interesting questions and answer them to move beyond the
obvious. Other terms to keep in mind that may enrich your observation may be: symbols and symbolism, paradoxes, alliteration, rhyme,
irony, repetition, overstatement, understatement, narration, punctuation, gender, characterization, is the subject respectable or
taboo, class(estate) politics or expectations, point of view, metaphors, religious significance, allegorical significance, numerology,
reappeari g images and so on.
This paper must come entirely from your observation. Any outside research will impact this paper negatively and any theft of another’s
ideas or intellectual property will fail this assignment. Paraphrase is plagiarism I this assignment.
