The Short Story and Poem: A Comparison of Literary Forms Custom Essay
Reflecting on this week’s literary readings (LIST BELOW OF POEMS), as well as your own reading experiences,
identify at least one major similarity and one major difference between the forms of the short story and the
poem. How do the differences between these literary forms affect how you read and respond to them?
A.) Describe the connections between the form of the poem or use of literary devices and your experience of the
poem. *For your experience, you can use the Reader-Response Literary Criticism in Chapter 16.2 of the text as a
bridge to connect to the poem. Select some of the bullet points and then answer them in your discussion about the
poem.
B.) Describe your reading experience. This is the part of your discussion where you will apply the key terms of
your choice from this week’s readings.
C.) If you wish, feel free to compare your experience of the poem (from list below) to your experience reading a
short story (from list below) that shares a similar theme.
Note: When the prompt asks you to describe the connections between the poem’s form, this means its visual (you
can also discuss sound) structure–how it is formatted and presented on the page. Poems are presented in various
ways with different effects. To get an idea of form, take a look at the way Emily Dickinson writes her poem “I’m
Nobody! Who Are You?” and how e.e. cummings writes “Buffalo Bill’s Defunct” in the textbook. Notice the stylistic
difference? This is an example of what you can write about.
